Mejico – Guac Made Fresh at Your Table

By 6pm, Mejico is already packed with a mix of customers from white collar, couples, to families. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere but it’s not uncomfortable. Diners are often seen enjoying a couple of drinks at the bar tables, or sharing some small dishes in friendly Mexican style.

An open kitchen is located right next to the entrance and you can see the busy chefs constructing the dishes from scratch! Look at those delicious crispy plantain chips and tacos OMG!!!!!!!

Guacamole AUD15

The best guac I have ever had because it is freshly smashed at your table. We love this beautiful concoction of avocado, serrano chilli, Spanish onion, coriander, and crushed pistachios. Scrape that baby up with some crispy plantain chips!!! YUM~~~

Snapper AUD17
A light and delicate starter to share. Refreshing clean taste sustainable Australian snapper, with mango & spicy habanero chilli, served with some exotic mini handmade squid ink & black olive tostadas.

Hickory & honey smoked brisket AUD12

You can’t go to a Mexican restaurant without ordering their tacos. A pair of tacos can be ordered and we have picked the the beef, but trout and chorizo are also available for the menu.

The shredded tender brisket is flavourful and is complimented nicely with pink pickled onions, cabbage, mustard seeds with spicy & nutty house made salsa macha. It’s smokey all the way from the grilled tortilla from the outside, to the marinated beef sitting inside. How can we not love that spicy kick to it!

Cauliflower adobo AUD22

At first, we thought it’s a bit of a weird combo putting granola with veggies together but they actually work really well together. A plate of golden goodness starts with grilled cauliflower florets, marinated in chipotle & adobo, sitting on a bed yellow mole & topped with crunchy granola. Nutty, sweet, and savoury all in a mouthful!

Sticky squid ink octopus AUD28

Mexican is not just about meat, tortilla, guac, or salsa. Seafood actually plays another significant role in the cuisine. These grilled Clarence River baby octopus are super fresh and very cook-through. The restaurant is not shy with their chili so their hand-made harissa salsa roja & piccadillo can definitely get you sweating.

Chipotle and miso barramundi AUD32

Our favourite dish of the night goes to this delicious piece of barramundi pan-roasted, served on garden peas, pickled red beetroot, Szechuan chilli oil. The flavour is so phenomenal that you can never forget. It’s has a hint of spiciness to it but not to the extend that you can’t eat. It’s quite a savoury dish so the pea sitting underneath balanced out the sodium level.

Ice cream sandwich AUD14

Lastly, you can’t not miss out on their few but fine selection of dessert. We have chosen this handmade giant macaroon filled with velvety caramel ice cream, with a nice touch of chilli chocolate ganache.

Verdict

Mejico may cost slightly more than your “Taco Tuesday” restaurants but it is not going to disappoint you. Order your favourite classic Mexican dishes as well as our favourite Barramundi if you are a fish person. Dessert is also a must because they are simply amazing and delicious AF. Go there and get it now!
