Kid Kyoto – Recently Opened Unconventional Japanese Fusion Restaurant

When would you think of when you hear the world “Japanese Fusion Cuisine”? The newly opened restaurant Kid Kyoto serves an exquisite omasake and a la carte menu with a decent cocktail menu as well. Yet, it’s nothing like what you think the traditional omasake should be. You won’t be able to find hand kneading sushi nor tempura. Yet, you can some familiar dishes with a twist.

Cocktails

Kid Kyo-tini 20

A special ‘Kid Kyoto blend’ from Archie Rose , with a light elegant concoction of Noilly Prat, Toji saké, fennel & edamame shrub. A must order for gin lovers.

A La Carte

Smoking salmon sashimi, wasabi pea & nori 24

Kid Kyoto put on a show when they brought out this dish which is covered in a clear smoked chamber glass and oh boy…. this dish is indeed smokey! The soft salmon sashimi slices are full of woody aroma, wrapped in a thin nori which gave just a hint of ocean taste. The wasabi pea pool of thin ‘Soup’ is light and packed of smokey flavour too!

Preserved lemon chicken tsukune, onsen egg ‘birds nest’ & chilli rayu 16

A tester for any Japanese restaurant and they have done it creatively using a side of ‘birds nest’ and dynamic seasonings. The Tsukune itself is the soft type not the crunchy type with some chicken cartilages in it. These little balls of mouthfuls are just fun to share with your mates.

Beef tartare ‘teriyaki flavour’, nashi pear & whipped katsuobushi 16

Now we are talking! This beef tartare is in a form that I have never tried before. The marinated tender beef is ‘loaded’ with sweet and crunchy pear and some crispy puffs to create a magic contrasting texture. It’s not just it! Katsuobushi has a very unique aromatic taste, and it’s just a perfect match with these tender sexy pink fresh beef tartare. IMO, it elevated the conventional taste of any beef tartare experiences that I had.

Cloudy bay clams, bonito schmaltz & roast tomato miso 38

When it comes to hot main dishes, you will definitely be satisfied with their meat and seafood dishes. We went for a lighter option which is a bowl of fresh juicy plumped big clams cooked in some of the most Japanese condiments bonito & miso. You just can’t go wrong with this dish. Straight up simple and delicious.

Hot green bean ‘shira-ae’ Japanese curry, sesame & tofu crumb 12

For sides, there are a few carbs options but once we again we went for a lighter option which is just some fresh green beans with an added salted and toasted taste from the sweet and savoury Japanese curry, toasted sesame and soft tofu.

Dessert

Last but not last, I have heard a lot of good words about their desserts so make sure you indulge some, or a lot of them!

Verdict

Kid Kyoto is a hip fusion Japanese restaurant hidden in a small alley. Great vibe, beautiful cocktails, magical dishes, thoughtful services.
