Hanami – Affordable Amakase in Causeway Bay

Hanami is one of the many good Japanese restaurants in Causeeway Bay. They have a very basic entrance and interior design. Right after you enter the restaurant,  you may see a very open kitchen and  bar on the left and other wooden tables and seats on the right.

The Japanaese restaurant imports fresh seafood from Japan daily to guarantee its maximum freshness. The price range is sort of medium for this quality of food.

Bitter melon wih bonito flakes

The fresh crunchy biter melon has just a light bitter and grassy taste, therefore the bonito flakes give a good unique savoury taste to the melon.

Marinated salmon fish head 冰頭漬(三文魚頭軟骨)

First time trying this Japanese marinated appetiser. The chewiness and crunchiness was over the top. The taste was similar to squid to be honest. The sticky pieces with a strong seafood taste went well with a little bit of chili flakes, chives and grated carrot.

Sashimi platter (Octopus Leg and mouth, scallop, Ebi prawn, gold bream 金時鯛, fatty salmon, toro

Having importing seafood daily, the restaurants serves their seafood in its original form.  While some salt was also provided on the side for you to dip your shell fish in.

The octpus leg is pretty big in pieces therefore you can imagine that the original octopus must be really big in size, while the mouth has been grilled beforehand to give a light burnt taste. Comparing to the leg, the mouth tasted stronger with a crunchier texture.

The scallops are not frozen and no seafood has been frozen from the restaurant, it tasted sweet with a bit of fresh stickiness.

The ebi prawn is really huge in size and the taste was super sweet and the prawn head had an even stronger taste! We were also told that overnight prawn taste better!

So as fatty salmon, the fatty oil taste is no stranger to me, great with just a bit of wasabi and Japanese soya sauce.

Lastly, it came to a piece of fatty toro. Not the fattiest piece of toro I have ever had, but it was fat enough that it melted in my mouth after a few bites.

Next, we were brough with 3 pieces of sushi, salmon roe, uni, and tuna with yuzu sauce.

The salmon roe is in season which is sexily transparent. The strong fishy taste from the each fresh  salmon roe bursted in  my mouth, mixed beautifully with the sushi rice, a true mouth-gasm!

Next, the fresh uni is from Canada, the dark golden colour uni gave a profound bittersweet aftertaste, another bite of mouth-gasm!

Lastly, a delicate piece of fish has a more intense taste when it goes with the yuzu sauce, not a bad bite to finish off the plate.

We have also ordered some hot dishes, the okra covered with  bonito flakes were fresh and healthy, while the white eel had a much firmer texture and I would like it to have a little more seasonings if possible.

Angus beef roll

Another very classic hot dish  to  enjoy, thinly sliced fatty angus beef wrapping around some crispy fried garlic flakes  as well as some spring onion to counterbalance with the fattiness from the  beef itself.

Seafood 茶碗湯

Lastly, it comes to this seafood 茶碗. By adding some fresh lime juice into the Japanese hot, it will bring out extra freshness from all the seafood , including  fish,  prawn, Japanese fish  cake, and some  mushroom! The design of the pot keeps the soup warm and you may use the lid  of  the pot as a cup  to drink  the soup!
